AN ARTISTS' NEED FOR AN AUDIENCE by DG Wilson Feb 5, 2009
As an artist I feel the drive to do art. It is a combination of spirit, destiny and genes. There is also a healthy dose of life experiences in the mix as well. The simple term for this drive is "Talent."
I have felt that those interested in doing art and learning about it are talented...everything else that qualifies art to be "Good" is taught. But of those that are taught to increase the quality of their work how many artists actually do NOT show their work to anyone else?
Art in all its' glamor, is designed to be seen. If there is no other viewer other than the artist the work lacks appeal to the artist. To be fully appreciated as art it needs to be viewed. Even if no one likes the work, the artist still feels more satisfaction than if there were no comments at all.
That brings to mind the problem that I face. If art needs to be viewed to be satisfying to the artist, then what art do I do? My "Own" art is work that I do for my own selfish desires. I do not need to see the images on a canvas personally to enjoy them, I can simply visualize them at will. So if my own art needs to be seen by others aren't I just trying to "Show off?"
Besides there is too many bills. I need to keep doing art that I feel OTHERS will like enough to buy. That has not happened to the extent that I require, but still I strive. So if I have to do art to make the bills (or at least try to,) then what is the point in trying to do my own work?
It almost seems as if those that call us artists that try to make a living at our talent, those that call us "Art Whores" are really the most selfish of all. They do their art for their own eyes, just what they want to see and do not care about what we think.
That almost seems like a slap in the face of God for giving them their talent. Art needs to be done for others so that they may benefit from the artists' vision. If no one sees the work then there is really no point in it at all.
