They talked in their couch cushion beds for over an hour about boys, life and dreams.  Charlie had heard everything about the little girls' dad and family.  In the dark she cried silently.
The last thing the child said before she drifted off into unrestful sleep was, "And they sent us home from school so we would be safe...."
       Charlie had not slept.

When dawn clawed at the dark, tore it to shreds Charlie could not help her optimism.  Maybe it was all over?  She rose quickly, went to the bathroom and quietly made coffee to the news turned down low.  Charlie let the child sleep in.
Around ten in the morning Charlie began to get nervous.  The little girl was still asleep, had not moved for hours.  Fearful of the horror she would feel if the child were dead, Charlie crept up the little body under the sheet.  Mirror in hand, Charlie cried softly, put it up to the little girls' nose and mouth and waited.  She held her breath as she tested the little ones'.
A soft mist of condensation formed on the mirror!  Charlie was so relieved she yelped out in triumph!  Hand over her mouth to stifle her sobs of terror averted Charlie rose quickly and went to the kitchen.  There she sobbed quietly until she felt better.  She had been certain the child had died on her living room floor!  Relief flooded through her body.  Almost giddy with it she went to the bedroom to get dressed.  The precinct was sure to be a mad house today.  Her sudden thought of what to do with the child hit her like a brick.  She had no ideas.
As she dressed Charlie felt something weird in the back of her brain.  Then her spine tingled for just a moment.  She fell dead instantly as if someone had pulled the plug on her life.
The little girl had awaken.  She entered the room an instant later.  Charlie, her new guardian was on the floor, eyes open just like her father's had been when he died.  She screamed and ran to Charlie, shook the body and pleaded that she come back.
In a crumpled heap Charlie was amazed to find that the brain lived on even after the body was gone.  She could hear and see but could not move or talk. Charlie's mind was not able to respond to her body but her brain did still process sight and sound.  Charlie struggled to take a breath, even make her heart start to beat again...but there was nothing.  For two minutes her brain lived on.
The sound of the child's voice faded away.  Charlie stared through eyes she could not move at her bedroom closet.  She could not help but watch as the wall of her home dissolved into billions of tiny particles before her open eyes.  Charlie understood somehow that they were molecules of the solid matter.  Each skipped and flew from their station in life as a tiny part of the wall or piece of clothing, the floor, her hand, the little girl everything was made of these little dots of form, billions for every square inch. When someone died they left their place and a small particle of blue color stayed behind.
They continued to fly away from what Charlie and everyone else called reality.  After enough holes in it were revealed Charlie beheld the absolute truth of the universe.  Each bit of her apartment, everything she knew to be real in her life were actually molecules.  When dead they left reality.  All that she counted upon to be solid were really made of these little dots of matter.  When connected they made everything real to people.  A cup of coffee, cancerous smoke from a cigarette, a shirt, a blade of grass-- they were all made of a mass of dots that hid the truth from people like a stage curtain.   Now at her death, Charlie saw what they really were just little dots that hid the real truth of their lives.
All the dots were gone.  They let her see beyond the apartment, beyond the city, beyond heaven.  For the full minute Charlie's brain had left she could clearly see the REAL humanity- what they all really were.
The little girl sobbed and screamed as she cradled Charlie's head in her lap.  Tears fell in Charlie's eyes, but she could not feel them.  She was on the other side of life.
Before her was a vast sea.   All Charlie could see was the water.  Deep blue green above at her level dark started to swallow the sunlight.  Below her it got black with the depth.  Charlie could feel that she floated on the current deep below the surface.  She turned as best she could to look to her right and left.  The sight shocked her so deeply she almost had a heart attack right then.  Somehow she managed.  Perhaps her job as a cop that had shown her so many horrors, it had actually steeled her from great surprises.  Charlie managed to survive the shock of what she saw, but knew that most people would not be able to handle it.
All about her were massive, hideous jellyfish.  Every one had tentacles longer than a foot ball field.  They streamed behind each silent monster head and caught their food as it swam by them.   Even though her single fish like eye could not see all that well, Charlie could tell that there were billions of these jellyfish around her.  In the depths of the dark ocean they moved silently like slow ghosts.  They were everywhere above, below and all around.  Charlie was suddenly terrified again!  How did she get there?  Was this Hell?!  She tried to breath, tried to swim, tried to scream and could do nothing.  It was as if she could not move her legs or arms, as if they were not even there.
With another jolt of shock, one that almost sent her into another death Charlie realized that she too was not a human being but a monstrous jellyfish with long tentacles!   She thrashed and shook at the realization.  Humanity was not real!  People, buildings, grass, trees, kites, dogs, EARTH was NOT real!  They only dreamed they were on Earth, they only dreamed their ENTIRE lives!
She turned her head in the other direction and saw that another jelly fish was very near.  Charlie could see it as clearly as her fish eye could manage.  Things that were closer were more distinct, she could see better.  A giant brain floated in the gelatinous head.  She could see right through the outer lawyers and actually see the brains... and they looked exactly like a human brain only much larger!  A single primitive eye at the top of the "head" stared into right into hers with a blank look as if no one were at home.
Charlie handled her fear again and scanned the entire monster.  She was surprised to see it had hundreds of fish and sea creatures entangled.  Even a full grown Blue Whale was caught in the tentacles!  There was something more on the strands too.  Charlie could perceive that there was a red colored bacteria attacking it.
Suddenly, as if a switch was thrown the other eye looked back at her!  It seemed as if the intelligence were thrust into the jellyfish all at once.  With horror Charlie realized that was how her eye looked too.  At first it was blank, a dead fish eye, now it stared at her with shock, fear, true terror.  Charlie could see it as a flat eye, but felt all the emotion rather than see it come from the other.   Apparently, Charlie thought, we were all psychically connected.   She could feel a tug at her brain, the jellyfish she watched suddenly died from the shock of the awful truth he was a giant sea monster not a dishwasher in New York City!
Charlie fought with all of her will and managed to hang on to her life, but the death of the one right next to her affected her so much that she almost died with it.  Others around them both were not as strong.  They shook then silently they sank.
She realized the full awful truth.  The other jellyfish was asleep deep in the dream world of humanity on Earth.  Charlie had been there only moments before.  But when the human being of the jellyfish died on "Earth" the soul of the person suddenly appeared in their natural awake state...as this monster.
Charlie maneuvered best as she could to watch the deep blue sea swallow the dead jelly fish and realized that millions of others were dying at that moment all about her.   Charlie watched them sink into the black depths like softly falling snowflakes to the sea bed where some other monster ate their corpses.
Charlie finally had total understanding, comprehension of their true state.  In Sunday School tales of all knowledge of life was given to the soul when it crossed the heavenly gates.  Perhaps this was heaven?!
In actuality they were not human beings anymore .  Humans were the memories of the past ingrained into the cells of each monster jellyfish!   Their entire story of human history from start to sea was stored in their collective memories.  But their real shape was hidden from them with the dream of Earth.  The shock of the sudden realization of their true state killed millions all about her.
But why then was she still alive?  Charlie scanned her new memory banks and saw the entire story of human history flash in her mind.   She slowed the memories down so they could be studied when she saw human history PAST the time she had been a cop.  It was actually far into their future in their human history but a distant past to her now.   Charlie saw hidden memories of their existence as people on the planet.  The entire story was locked away in their brains, it had always been there.  When they died they saw the secret chapters, ones that were too shocking to remember as a human dream.  Charlie understood the logic instantly. If they as humans on the planet Earth they remember...the people would be in a terrible state if they knew the truth–that they were all actually beasts of a desolate, dismal future.
Tens of thousands of years ago humanity had killed the planet with their machines and smoke.  The ice caps melted with the warmed globe.  This happened in what the jellyfish call their ancient history.  Most of Earth disappeared beneath the rising waters.  Humanity had managed to survive for a hundred years above the water, but then they started to go beneath the surface.  Charlie could see their human bodies transform as if she watched time elapsed photos.  Hands became fins and flippers for feet.  Gills mutated in some children then everyone.  In time they lost they flippers, even their limbs and became a close relation to mermaids.  They were half human and fish.  But even those human qualities were lost eventually.  Only their intelligence and what was necessary to thrive in the deep seas of the planet remained.
After thousands of more generations they had evolved into these jellyfish.  Their brains and nervous systems were largely the same, but they had eventually shed all sense of their human bodies.  Humanity was now nothing more than organisms that floated deep below the surface and absorbed the nutrients of creatures caught in their adapted tentacles.
Charlie realized why all this was hidden, these future beings were ashamed of the way they treated the planet.  People were appointed by God to take care of the Earth and they killed it. To keep them alive and to pay their debt to nature each still thought they were human beings back when they could change the future.  They dreamed of their past lives as human beings so they could make everything right again.  They dreamed in vain.
God was still mad.  A red bacteria, like the former red tide that affected sea life, had adapted and begun to attacked their species.  Humanity as a species were dying out.  As the bacteria grew the ability of the jellyfish to dream got weaker.  Eventually the dream world of the jellyfish crumbled.  Their dreamed life- a human in the city, the country, wherever they were at that moment, faltered and finally fell away.  The human on the other side of the dream died suddenly of no apparent cause.  When the soul of the person was thrust into the jellyfish they saw true reality.   The shock of the realization of their true state, a giant jelly fish that had evolved from their past, killed most of the people.  And the monster of humanity died.
But Charlie lived on, witnessed and continued to survive at the will of God.  Still she could not help but wonder what would happen if she died as a jellyfish?  Would she be another even more monstrous beast that dreamed this reality?  In an eternity she would find out, until then she and the last survivors of the plague needed to figure out how to turn back time to fix the damage humanity caused the planet.
They had their chance as humans it seemed an impossible task now.
