THE BEGINNING Chapter 1
"I woke up, and I mean that literally, I woke to find myself in a straight jacket, bound to a Gurney in a white padded room. I was confused to say the least. But there I was, suddenly awake and rationale. I couldn't hear the voices! I had no idea as to why and thought that an experimental drug the Doctors constantly pumped into my veins had actually worked!
"But I was so very wrong.
"I could hear many voices outside the room in the hall. They sounded excited and loud. I wondered if there was a riot.
"After a little while a face appeared in the tiny window to the door of my room. She was smiling and it made her very pretty. Curly hair and dimpled she bounced into the room with joy, AND she held a large ring of keys.
"I vaguely remember her, she was a woman in the lower floors that had a milder case of Schizophrenia. She usually never talked, unless it was a scream to get away from her, and she NEVER smiled. But here she was rattling on about how great this was and what it mystery it could be, ‘It must be God, I am telling everyone it must be God...we were touched...' and so on, as she undid my binds.
"I laid silently not knowing what to make of the situation. I didn't know if she knew that I understood her. Perhaps she had stolen some keys and was letting me out for some delusional reason of her own. I just let her work at the binds and kept a look out at the door. No guards or Doctors tried to stop her so I took advantage. In no time I was free and sat up.
"She continued, never stopped, ‘...and I said to myself this must be God's work. I mean it was about time you know? He let us rot in here and they out their live so freely! So, I think He finally saw us and helped. The Meek shall inherit the Earth right? But I am not so sure now you know? I mean there were some good ones too, and they just went out like all the rest- Blip! Sooooo...'
"I let her talk, but I needed to get the HELL out of that freakin' place! Without a word to her I stepped out into the hall.
"For a decade I had been locked up in that padded room. No bathroom, chair or a bed-unless I was strapped down to one. It was a sentence that was beyond unjust, it was a tragedy. For 10 years I had dreamed about going into this hall, for so long I fantasized about running free. But my condition kept me in their chains with no voice, or help.
"As I stepped into the hall I was thrilled, and scared. I looked about for the guards, my head whipped to the right and left. I could feel their blows in my kidneys, head, belly, legs from past attacks as if they happened right then. There was no one official in the hall at all. No Doctors, Nurses...the hateful orderlies... but noone ran at me; none tried to lock me back up because they thought I was a deranged animal!
"Instead the halls were filled with excited patients that talked suddenly like the Doctors! I was stunned, too stunned to utter a word but most that I saw prattled on as if they hadn't talked in years. Well, to be honest, most hadn't spoken sanely in decades so I guess it made a lot of sense after all.
"The woman followed me, never stopping in her dialog. I ignored her and tried to find out what happened by listening to the excited conversations about me. When I turned a corner in the hall I saw a Doctor that had never treated me directly stood like a statue in mid stride. Instinct had told me that he was coming to put a stop to this chaos and my body clenched in anticipation from a blow to the back of my head by one of the guards... but there was still nothing. The Doc was frozen in the hall. He looked like he was in a hurry to get somewhere. One leg was back and the foot flexed. The right leg was up and the foot about four inches off the tile. It was impossible to keep that pose for any length of time longer than a stride. The Docs' coat was slack but the body tense in movement. The entire scene was a freaky nightmare that was too real to deal with properly. It even looked like he was in mid word on the cell phone at his ear! Was the other party frozen in their conversation as well?
"I went up to him and studied the statue from all angles. He was stiff but still warm. His heart pumped and breath moved in and out of his body in very shallow little pants. But his eyes, limbs, mouth never moved again.
"The woman that had freed me pushed her slightly graying hair from her face behind her ear as she walked and talked to my right. I had never saw her do that before. Not that I had much time to study her locked up in that padded room. But I remembered when I was out in the facility and had the run of the rooms they put me in that I had seen her hair in wild tangles and tufts. I had thought that they couldn't get to comb her hair because she was such a terror when anyone got too close.
"She finally said something that interested me and I tuned in again, ‘...And they all look like THAT! It was amazing, really I was watching Doctor Jude when he suddenly froze up just like that, I mean it would have been a really INTENSE moment... if you know what I mean, in the middle of a sentence at session, but then, and I mean at the SAME MOMENT I and the others just sort of ‘clicked' into place. I don't know WHAT place, but they are all in the SAME place!'
"The suddenly sane patient then turned to another that did somersaults down the hall, grabbed the mans' leg when it was in the air by her shoulder. She asked his face by the floor as she held him in place by the leg, ‘I mean it was like we ‘clicked' into place right?'
"The man gave a hearty agreement and dropped to the floor on his knees laughing. He stood and put out his hand to me. ‘I am Jeffery Somerset, pleased to meet you.' He stared into my eyes as if challenging himself to drop them, or maybe it was me that he challenged to look away. I was amazed when I didn't. I hadn't looked into another persons' eyes for nearly 30 years. For the first time since I ‘Awoke' I spoke.
"‘I am Adam.' I didn't want to give my last name, I don't know why perhaps to preserve some sense of secrecy or out of mental habit. Distrust? I just don't know but that is all I said and he caught me on it right away.
"‘No last name huh? Want to be a mystery to me? Well guess what...us TALKING to the other is a mystery to ME!' With that he walked on past me with a touch of arrogance. His swagger annoyed me. Must be good to be so free. Then it hit me again...I was free too!
"Right after that realization I BOLTED out of that crazy house! For the first time since I was a child I looked into the sun. I felt my eyes burn and water while I squinted. The tingle of the warmth, the smell of the flowers, the sound of the birds in song. Everything was too strange! It was just too much stimulation after so long! My head began to pound and my mouth went dry. I found that my hand was on the handle to get in, to go BACK in. With a shudder I threw it off the handle as if it was burning hot and literally slapped myself in the face. Hard too. It worked.
"With a sound that was defiant I turned my back on my only home I ever knew and walked into the evening light. I was free, sane and was going to enjoy it!
"Outside of the open gates I took a right. As I went into town I saw cars that were stalled at the sides of the road. Some were on their doors or roofs. There were mangled dead people in them, others frozen. They all were so still and silent it was scary. I knew that this was not right, knew that it was strange but still it made me wonder if it was natural at the same time. What else could do that if not God, right?
"I chuckled to myself as I walked past the carnage. If I had mentioned any of this to one of the Doctors they would have given me a shock therapy treatment for it. The world was suddenly strange and I was the sane one...if I told anyone that had been sane what I saw they would have taken my brain and put it in a pickle jar for teaching students about the grand psychosis that can ravage a persons brain!
"The cars that were still on the road and able to be driven were ALL out of gas. It was like the people were frozen all at the same moment all over, doing what ever it was that they were doing! Those that were driving and froze went off the road, crashed. The others that had stopped or were at waiting at a stop light...froze and sat with their foot on the brake, car in drive until it ran out of gas! I was stunned. What could do this?
"Then I found out.
